Ever Meulen

Beyond all the successes, isn't the most important one the recognition of one's peers?

The Ever Meulen & Friends exhibition is a dazzling opportunity for the most famous illustrators to express their boundless devotion to Eddy. And for his fan club, it's gratifying to see that the tributes paid to him are characterized by an in-depth knowledge of his work. So welcome Eddy fans and Maison de l'Image devotees (who are often the same people) to a poetic bath in Ever Meulen's world, where the picture rails deconstruct vintage architecture with a Boogie flavour, where improbable perspectives are criss-crossed with automotive fantasies, often with the furtive appearance of a cat, a dog and a pipe.

This exhibition will show us once again that the enjoyment of art is not always where we expect it to be. Eddy's work is first and foremost a commission, and we can only hope that contemporary art will capture our attention with such creativity, talent and mastery. La Maison de l'image has long been alone in working for the recognition of art that "compromises itself in business", art that is so little taken into account by institutions, and is therefore pleased to note that "commercial" artists have made their belated entry into galleries and museums. The movement is underway, and the history of art is also a matter of patronage. By finally recognizing commercial art, are we returning to the medieval era of religious and princely patronage?
